Enjoy a Tree of Life – one of them stands at the Witch's Bridge, where Jels Midtsø and Jels Nedersø are connected by a short "stream". Trees of life host a rich animal and plant life and contribute to a great diversity of species in the Danish Nature Agency's forests.
Today, the Witch's Bridge is a small wooden bridge that crosses the canal between Jels Nedersø and Jels Midtsø. The two lakes are thus connected and can be sailed between them. The Witch's Bridge is located at the bottom of the tunnel valley - and both north and south of it, the landscape cuts even deeper. In fact, Jels Nedersø is up to 11 m deep.
The name of the witch's bridge may have two reasons: firstly, the original bridge was built with elaborate gnarled posts, and secondly, there was originally a very crooked oak tree close by, which may have sparked the imagination. Today, the walkway is designed to be disabled-friendly. The bridge was originally built after the reunification in 1920, when a path was made around the lakes.
At Jels there are three lakes, namely Jels Nedersø of 54 ha, Jels Midtsø of 25 ha and Jels Oversø of 9 ha. They are located in a row at the bottom of a tunnel valley and are connected by Jels Å. The area is protected to ensure that no further construction is done along the lake shores and to preserve meadows and hedgerows. The lakes are good breeding sites for waterfowl. h
