For a hungry Hærvej hiker or cyclist, we have made an overview of places on the Hærvej stretch between Bække and Jels (through Vejen Municipality), where you can buy yourself some lunch to go.
We have compiled a overview of where you can buy something to eat to go along the Ancient Road on the stages Bække-Vejen-Skodborg-Jels. It can be sandwiches, packed lunches, meal salads and drinks. These are places that are located immediately next to the hiking route and on the bicycle route. The list is made so that the places are from north to south, and you can see opening hours and distance to the Hærvej routes.
Eateries with table and menu on the Hærvej stretch can be found here.
If you are looking for a nice place in nature and enjoy lunch, then we can recommend:
- Head north from Bække - then you should take a lunch break at Klebæk Højene and feel the presence of history.
- South from Bække - here you will take a trip to Bække Anlæg on the southern outskirts of the city. Covered lunch box house AND Niels Hansen Jakobsen's Mermaid Fountain and mega big beautiful trees.
- Further south from Bække - from the cemetery south of Læborg Church is a fantastic view to the south. (We know there are divided opinions about staying in cemeteries, but the view here is worth it.)
- In the middle of Vejen Town, it is a nice experience to sit on the museum square in front of Vejen Art Museum. The sound here is splashing water from the Troll Fountain.
- To the south from Vejen, it is fine in the small forest between Vejen Sports Center and Askov, by the pond in Askov and in Skibelund Krat. AND then there is also the table and bench set at Kongeåen, where the Hærvej route crosses its largest watercourse. Today there is a bridge. Nice view, bird choir and greenery as far as the eye can see.
- A little north of Jels you will find the Pilgrim Hut, which you will probably have all to yourself.
- In and around Jels you will find plenty of seating around the lake, the lake bath, etc. You can also sit on the amphitheater, which every year forms the basis for Jels Viking Play. If the stage is in use for rehearsals, you will probably know.
- South of Jels, it is lovely on the northern outskirts of Stursbøl Plantation.
