Jels - on the edge of the lake and forest and with exciting Viking activities.
With a scenic location by the Jels Lakes, Jels is a center for hiking and experiences in nature. The town is surrounded by forests to the north and south, through which both the Hærvej hiking route and the bicycle route go. The old Farris forest, which previously covered large parts of South and South Jutland, crosses a beautiful tunnel valley, where the 3 lakes create a varied, recreational area.
The town's church, which dates from 1854, was built close to the lake, presumably because the lake was used for baptisms, replacing an earlier, smaller medieval church. Not far from the church is Jels Mill, a white, Dutch mill from 1859 that has been grinding grain for the area for 100 years.
The centre of the town's recreational area is the architecturally beautiful Jels Søbad. This is also the starting point for hikes on Jels Nature. and planetary path, and on the paths that go around two of the three Jels lakes. Throughout the summer period, the town's citizens and guests meet at the lake bath.
Jels has become a meeting place for all Viking souls in the southern part of Jutland. The amphitheatre, where Viking plays are performed every year in July, is located right by the lake and close by is Jels Viking Village with fine copies of houses from the Viking Age. Everything is run by a group of passionate enthusiasts.
The Royal Oak, on the other side of the lake, offers another activity option; namely golf, and the town has a sports center with a gym. There are several dining and shopping opportunities in the town, so you can safely stay, enjoy nature and recharge in the relaxing atmosphere that characterizes the town.
We say Møjn
Jels is located south of the Kongeå, and thus in an area where we often say Møjn when we walk, but not when we meet, i.e. Møjn is used instead of goodbye. So you can also experience that in Jels.
