With its 961 hectares, Dronninglund Storskov offers an extraordinary nature experience.
The forest, which is characterized by coniferous and deciduous forest, has a large selection of marked hikes for both children and adults. There are also many traces of the past in the forest, such as the Troll Stone, which is a remnant from the Ice Age. The Troll Stone is located just south of the chapel and is one of the large stones that the troll would throw at the village of Gl. Kirk. The Troll Stone is called the Wishing Stone. The story goes that if you make a wish while climbing the stone, your wish will come true - but only if you don't tell anyone about your wish. Vendsyssel's highest point with its 136 meters above sea level, Knøsen, can also be found in the forest.
At a special location in the Forest (address: Skovvej 14-18), the natural laws have gone berserk. Water actually flows uphill, where it is supposed to flow downhill. Especially, if you visit by bicycle, you will feel the unexplainable phenomenon. When you race downhill, you have to suddenly start pedaling in the middle of the hill in order to not stop going. Likewise, your bicycle can roll uphill without you pedaling at all.
Sømosen is a raised bog located between the high hills of Jyske Ås in the southern part of Dronninglund Storskov. Sømosen carries an exciting story of ancient folk life and is definitely worth a visit.
Up until the last century, the slopes of the bog were home to over 40 families, all of whom were market traders, artists, jugglers or musicians. These families were attracted to the desolate location of the bog and settled in primitive huts and earth caves where they stayed during the winter. In the summer, they traveled around the country performing. The parking lot on Kirkevej can be used for the hiking route.
