Did you know that the Great Horned Owl is Europe's largest owl? It is as much as 10 times heavier than its smaller family member, the Barn Horned Owl.

Great Horned Owl is the largest species of owl in Europe. With an impressive wingspan of 160-188 cm and a weight of up to 4 kg, it is over 10 times larger than the Wooded Owl. The Great Horned Owl is found, in Denmark, exclusively in Jutland. Breeding pairs have been registered in all of Jutland's former counties, but the exact locations are kept secret to protect the species. 

Hard to find 

Great Horned Owl is generally a species that is difficult to register, but it is estimated that there are 30-35 pairs in Denmark. The Danish population was completely eradicated at the end of the 1800s and was then absent for about 100 years. In 1984, the species re-immigrated from Germany and  a pair settled in Southern Jutland. 

Great Horned Owl is  shy of humans and likes to breed far from busy paths. In Denmark, it usually breeds near limestone pits where there are good hunting opportunities, or in forests where there is limited traffic.

Not picky 

Great horned owl is highly adaptable and eats whatever is available. Among the most common prey are found; hedgehog, ring pigeon, black-headed gull, rook, brown rat and marsh pig.
