Right where the Ancient Road (Hærvejen) winds its way through the southern part of Rold Forest, you’ll find Sortemosehus Nature Centre and Pilgrim Hostel – a peaceful haven in the heart of Himmerland’s largest forest. Here, where the sounds of nature take over and the forest’s deep tranquillity surrounds you, you can slow down, reconnect and simply breathe.

Sortemosehus is set in a former forester’s house and offers a nature centre, gathering space, and a cosy hostel with three atmospheric rooms: The Robber, The Witch and The Poacher – each with four beds and its own little tale from the myths and legends of Rold Forest. The new timber buildings are bright and inviting, with access to showers, toilets and facilities for guests with disabilities.

Here you sleep in the heart of the forest, surrounded by whispering trees and the song of morning birds. The rooms are heated, making it possible to stay all year round – and for extra comfort, you can rent duvets, pillows and bed linen on site.

In the former stable, you’ll find a lunchroom and shared kitchen where you can heat your food, make coffee or simply relax by the wood stove. There’s space for up to 15 guests – and on warm days, you can move out to the covered terrace or gather around the campfire at the shelter site.

No matter the season, Sortemosehus is the perfect base for exploring nature. Wander along Rold Forest’s magical trails, sense the history of the Ancient Road, or take your bike along winding routes through woodland and heath. In the area, you’ll find springs, ancient monuments, deep bogs – and that unique calm only nature can provide.

• Option to rent bed linen (70 DKK per night)
• Shelter site with two standard shelters and one accessible shelter (DKK 40 per night per shelter)
